Indonesia: Worship leader forbidden from playing “Fierce”
Bulan “Moonlight” Chahaya, worship leader in the General Church of Indonesia was recently put on notice about including the song “Fierce” by Jesus Culture in the church’s worship set.
In a tsunami-prone region of the world, and especially after the recent one in Sulawesia, the song is thought to come across as insensitive, much like this article if you fail to accept it as complete satire.
The anthem-like chorus of “Like a tidal wave, crashing over me, rushing in to meet me here, Your love is fierce” is, without doubt, a powerful declaration but was felt to be sending the wrong message.
The worship pastor offered to sing “How He loves me” but was then accused of being insensitive to victims of Hurricane Michael with the words “Loves like a hurricane” never mind the whole “sloppy wet kiss” lyric.
In the end, the pastor and worship leader came to a compromise by singing the uncontroversial worship song, “Reckless Love.”
